Attending the Edwardian Ball is a long held dream of mine. I just missed the 2012 celebration, but one of these years it's going to happen!

One of my favorite daydreams to get lost in involves me constructing elaborate costumes that I will wear when I go.

I'm particularly smitten by this lady's jacket...

Have you ever atteded this event? I would love to hear about it.

Up for a 2013 pilgrimage to San Francisco?

I discovered the art of Liz Mamont a while back via High Fructose.

I absolutely love it!

I'm also going to have to find myself a copy of Mamont's For the Ladies. It reminds me a little of Edward Gorey in its humor. Plus, I spotted some pugs!

(AND she has paid homage to one of my favorite short stories of all time, The Yellow Wallpaper so I'm definitely smitten...)

Le Noir Bizarre

I just read about read about the Halloween event Le Noir Bizarre which will be taking place in my own fair city of Tacoma tomorrow!

According to the local paper it will be "a Gothic-Victorian-steampunk All Hallow’s Eve celebration Sunday at Sanford and Son Antiques."

I'm so excited that this happening here, but unfortunately I won't be able to attend as I have a prior commitment. Hopefully it will be a great success and become an annual event.

Any locals interested or planning to attend?

I would love to hear about it!

The Vampire Hunting Kit via Misanthropics via Deviant Art

A while back Misanthropics posted about this fantastic vampire kit. I could study this photo for quite a while. The attention to detail is extraordinary. It has inspired me to plan the creation of similar little cases for the hunting and gathering of fantastical things. Faerie chasing? (my niece is quite the expert on this) Or perhaps ghost hunting? A kit with bottles for ectoplasm and maybe a special spirit photography camera? (Ghost hunting the old, old-fashion way- not like these newfangled TV shows with thier sound equipment and night vision...) Oooh! A Sasquatch kit would need to find it's way in there too...

The possibilities are endless. What would you make?

This also reminds me: I finally started to read The Strange Case of Edward Gorey that I mentioned a while back. I was beyond delighted to read that he was a big Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan!

Sometimes when worlds collide it's a truly marvelous thing.

I know that the long-awaited little green shoots of spring are finally starting to peak through all the gloom and decay of winter and the birds are now up before I reluctantly leave my bed, but still I'm always yearning somewhere in the back of my wistful mind for a cool crisp autumn day and the crunch of leaves beneath my boots. Inspiration in Rediscovery

Just when all seemed lost, Edward Gorey saved the day.

Hello again! It's been a while since I've been here. Nearly two months?!?! I have been in a deep deep hole of lack of inspriation, motivation, and yes, basically depression. Perhaps I can admit here that spring is my least favorite season. Perhaps I can even go a little further and say I kind of hate it. One day it's sunny, one day it's raining; I never know if I'm going to be uncomfortably warm or shivering by lunch. Should I have brought sunglasses or gloves? Spring does not inspire me. Ever since childhood I remember counting February as my very least favorite month.

This combined with what feels like endless sickness, job depression, and lack of creative drive has left me feeling quite down. I was constantly considering retiring this blog altogether, but decided just to wait a bit longer and see how things went.

I'm so glad I did, because just this morning my very awesome little brother sent me an article from the Seattle Times titled Edward Gorey's Sensibility is Growing Like Nightshade. Somehow this is exactly what I needed to shake me up a bit. It reminded me of some of those things that truly delight and inspire.

Admittedly, I sometimes find it depressing when things I love and hold dear are suddenly "mainstream". I can't help but feel it steals away a little of the magic these things hold for me. However, for some reason, this article didn't leave me feeling this way. Instead, for whatever reason, I simply feel inspired in a way I haven't been in quite some time. I am ready to start creating again; hopefully to contribute something both unique, but also reflective of who I am in combination with things that have collectively influenced and inspired me.

"Told in verse and illustrated in a style that crosses Surrealism with the Victorian true-crime gazette, Gorey stories are set in some unmistakably British place, in a time that is vaguely Victorian, Edwardian and Jazz Age all at once. Though Gorey was a 20th-century American, he conjured a world of gramophones and cars that start with cranks, of boater-hatted men in Eton collars knocking croquet balls across the lawn while sloe-eyed vamps in cloches look on, and sinister things sink, bubbling, into the reflecting pond." {excerpt}

The Palace of Versailles:: Sciences and Curiosities

Anytime I hear the word "curiosities" I know that I'm probably about to discover something that will entirely fascinate me.

I found this link via this blog and knew I had to share. The Court of Versailles features all kinds of wonderful things: flying machines, clocks, automatons.... Currently they have The Tympanum Player, created by the joint efforts of clockmaker Peter Kintzing and cabinet maker David Roentgen sometime in the 1780's.

The Strange Case of Edward Gorey

I was very excited to read this article's mention (via Lit and Life) of the hardback re-release of The Strange Case of Edward Gorey availble later this year.

"...Gorey was a reclusive, enigmatic figure who never married, professed asexuality in interviews, and became famous for a twisted and faintly ominous body of work... [Author] Alexander Theroux was Gorey’s friend and neighbor for more than a quarter century. Part biography, part artistic analysis, and part memoir of a long friendship, with exclusive interviews conducted shortly before Gorey’s death, this book is generally accepted as the most comprehensive portrait of Gorey ever written."

The Chimney Sweep

When I had originally planned this post, I had something a little more light-hearted in mind. Perhaps my mind had reverted straight to a certain dashing-though-dusty group of fellows singing "Chim-chiminey" whilst dancing the night away on the rooftops of foggy London town.

If only it had really been that romantic and jolly. The life of a real chimney sweep was very sad, dangerous, and cruel.

The worst part was that it was very common for children to be used for these tasks. The stories are heartbreaking. More can be read about thier lives HERE.

Yet despite the horror of thier everyday lives, pictures like this one below make me smile. It is amazing what the human spirit can endure...

I've thought a lot about sweeping out the old this weekend. I'm ready for a new start. How about you?

A few days after writing the post about The Disembodied Hand, I came across these little arms at a vintage flea market. For no logical reason I felt that I had to have them. My dearest boyfriend thinks I'm kind of a wierdo as do my lovely mom and sisters who were with me when I bought them. I'm pretty sure I am a bit strange...

Have you ever bought something completely bizarre and impractical (and maybe a little creepy) simply because you felt some unexplainable burning desire to make it your own?

The Disembodied Hand

When I was very little I had a horrible nightmare about a disembodied hand. I think it was actualy one of the first nightmares I ever remember having. Although it might sound little silly now, sometimes just the memory of it still gives me chills...

I found myself sitting on a bed in a strange dim bedroom. I had never been in before, but it still seemed eerily familiar. All of the walls were paneled with an oppressive dark wood and covered with crowded bookshelves. The entire place was cluttered and it was very still and very silent.

Suddenly, I heard a slight rustling sound coming from the shelf against the wall behind me. When I looked, there appeared a disembodied hand coming through the bookshelf and straining to reach past stacks of paper and books.

I tried to scream and run from the room, but as is always the case in these disturbing dreams, I could do neither.

Lately these disembodied Victorian hands seem to be everywhere. Have you noticed? I was reading a fascinating piece on the fetishization of the female hand in Victorian times the other night, but I cant seem to track it down again. Is anyone familiar this idea or any others pertaining to the disembodied hand?

'Tis the season for all thing strange and mysterious. In that spirit (pun intended) I bring you some of the more curious pieces of the Victorian Era. Spirit Photography was first discovered by William Mumbler in the 1860's when he accidentally created a photo containing double exposure. He wisely realized his opportunity and began a life as a medium "photographing" the lost loved ones of his clients. Whether they are fabricated or truly otherworldly, they are nonetheless a little creepy and best viewed at night by candlelight....

New Curiosities

When I was younger I went through a period of being completely engrossed with butterfly collecting. This was highly influenced by repeated readings of Girl of the Limberlost. I still have a specimen box or two of some lovely insects, but these days I can't help but feel a twinge of guilt over their untimely deaths. Nonetheless, the Victorian interest in collections of the Natural World and Cabinets of Curiosities still fascinates. These papercuts from Tina Tarnoff's Etsy shop are a tempting way to start a new collection.

I must say, I love corsets! Even when I played dress-up as a little girl I wanted a corset so badly that I tried to make one. I couldn't really sew, so I cut out something than slightly resembled a corset and poked holes in the back. I used some kind of twine I found in the garage to lace it up and needless to say, it didn't really hold up... I believe I also attempted to construct one out of cardboard thinking it would be sturdier, but again... No luck. (I was also slighty chubby so that poor little contraption never had a chance.)

New Zealand and The Piano

Lately I have been in the beginning stages of planning a trip. New Zealand is at the top of the list and I started thinking the other day of the film The Piano. I haven't seen it many years and what I remember most about it is the stunning imagery and, of course, the music. It is an unsettling film. The feeling of "misplaced Victoriana" is both lonely and beautiful.
